More Than a Kit: How Brunel Group is Supporting Confidence and Opportunity in Zwide

We are incredibly grateful to Brunel Group for supporting our work in South Africa through the sponsorship of our U11 Siyaphakama All-Star kits.

The Siyaphakama programme operates in Zwide, one of the most disadvantaged communities in South Africa, working across six primary schools. Many of the children in this community are growing up in environments shaped by crime, unemployment, and instability, with limited access to safe spaces and even fewer clear pathways for the future.

This is where sport becomes something much bigger than the game itself.

Using Sport as a Tool for Change

Through the programme, previously unemployed young people from the community are placed into schools as coaches and role models. Their role goes far beyond sport.

They help to build routine, discipline, confidence, and belief in the young people they work with. For many children, this is the first time they are consistently encouraged to see what they are capable of.

From this foundation, the Siyaphakama All-Star teams are formed. These teams are not simply made up of the most talented players. They represent young people who have shown commitment, resilience, and personal growth.

Stepping Into New Spaces

Being selected for an All-Star team opens doors that would otherwise remain closed.

Players are given the opportunity to compete across the province against well-resourced schools. For many, this is the first time they step into these environments, spaces that can often feel out of reach.

This is where something as simple as a kit becomes incredibly powerful.

Why the Kit Matters

Without the right kit, young players can arrive already feeling different, already feeling like they do not belong.

With it, everything changes. They arrive as a team. Equal. Prepared. Proud.

It shifts not only how others see them, but more importantly, how they see themselves.

Morgan Harlin, United Through Sport South Africa Chief Operating Officer said:

That shift in mindset, from “I shouldn’t be here” to “I deserve to be here”, is where the real impact starts. Proud of the team for making this happen, and grateful to Brunel Group for backing something that goes far beyond the surface.

One of our players summed it up best, sharing that wearing his new kit made him feel like he had “superpowers”. For him, it felt like a reward for the hard work it took to earn his place in the All-Star team.

A Proud Moment for Siyaphakama

The kit handover marked a special moment for everyone involved. Rugby, netball, soccer, and cricket kits were distributed to the All-Star teams, followed by a U11 derby day hosting Kabega Park Primary School and Alpha Primary School.

The results were impressive, with all three teams winning their opening matches. But the real success went far beyond the scoreboard.

What stood out most was the confidence, excitement, and pride on the faces of the players as they stepped onto the field.

Siyaphakama Programme Coordinator Nonkululeko Mashini shared:

“This is bigger than sport. When our boys and girls put on this kit, they feel confident and equal, and that confidence shows in how they play.”

A Shared Vision

Brunel Group also shared their support for the initiative:

“We are delighted to support the Siyaphakama All-Stars and the incredible work United Through Sport is doing in South Africa. It is a joy to see these young players representing their community with pride in their new kits. Best of luck for the season ahead.”

This partnership reflects a shared belief in the power of sport to create opportunity and drive meaningful change.

Looking Ahead

As the season begins next month, we are excited to follow the journey of these All-Star teams.

In places like Zwide, where structural challenges limit access and opportunity, programmes like Siyaphakama play a vital role in opening doors. With the support of partners like Brunel Group, we are not only removing barriers but actively creating pathways.

This is about more than sport. It is about confidence, belonging, and belief.

And this is just the beginning.
