Launch of Homework Club at Isaac Booi Primary School

At United Through Sport, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. This quarter, we are thrilled to announce a significant step forward in our ongoing teaching program: the launch of the Homework Club at Isaac Booi Primary School.

For years, United Through Sport has had a strong and impactful relationship with Isaac Booi Primary, where our volunteer teachers work tirelessly to address challenges such as large classroom sises, teacher absences, and the need for individualised support. These efforts have made a notable difference in the daily lives of the students, and now, with the introduction of the Homework Club, we’re taking our commitment to a new level.

The Need for Homework Support

During discussions with the school’s teaching staff, it was reported that over 50% of the pupils do not receive any homework support at home. This lack of academic support outside of school presents a significant barrier to the students’ academic success. Many students, especially those in their final years, struggle to keep up with their studies, often falling behind due to a lack of guidance and assistance with their assignments.

We know that individual attention and encouragement can make a huge difference, not just in the completion of assignments, but in boosting students’ overall academic performance. This insight led us to establish the Homework Club dedicated to these students.

A Focus on Grade 7 Pupils

In partnership with the school’s teaching staff, 15 Grade 7 students were selected to participate in the Homework Club. These students are at a critical point in their educational journey, with final exams approaching fast. According to teachers, these students often fail to complete their homework or engage in adequate exam revision, which puts their academic progress at risk.

By focusing on this group, we aim to provide tailored, one-on-one support to help them fully understand the tasks and topics they are working on, ensuring they’re better prepared for their exams. The Homework Club gives each student 30 minutes of dedicated, individual support each week — a crucial opportunity to address any gaps in their understanding and improve their exam readiness.

The Impact of Personalised Attention and Looking Ahead

What sets the Homework Club apart is its focus on personalised, hands-on support, something that has proven to be incredibly effective in boosting students’ confidence and academic performance. Thanks to the dedication and passion of our volunteers, these students are receiving the individual attention they need to thrive. Whether it’s tackling a tricky math problem, working through a language arts assignment, or preparing for final exams, the Homework Club provides a safe space for students to ask questions, receive guidance, and develop their understanding in ways they may not have had the opportunity to do before.

We’re already seeing positive changes in how these students approach their studies. The ability to work one-on-one with a mentor has helped them feel more confident and empowered in their academic abilities. The growth we’ve witnessed so far is just the beginning.

As we continue to monitor the Homework Club’s progress, we are excited about its long-term impact. Sometimes, all it takes is the right amount of time and individual support to unlock a student’s full potential. We’re incredibly proud of the volunteers who are making this possible and the positive effects it’s having on the students’ educational journey.

United Through Sport’s mission to create positive change through education and sport is unfolding through the Homework Club, and we’re eager to see it grow. We can’t wait to share more updates on this exciting initiative and the continued progress of our dedicated learners at Isaac Booi Primary School!
