As part of Common Goal’s Move for the Planet initiative, and in partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation and Orange Water Works, United Through Sport has developed a multi-layered community project that brings together sport, sustainability, education, and local opportunity.
While the Eco-Turf may be the most visible feature, the true impact of this initiative extends far beyond the pitch.

A Sustainable Solution for a Growing Challenge
Set within a community affected by water scarcity, the project has been intentionally designed to address both environmental and social needs. The site captures and filters rainwater, with excess water redirected into an on-site community garden.
This garden plays a vital role in supporting the school feeding scheme, enabling food to be grown sustainably while creating a direct connection between environmental responsibility and everyday community benefit. It is a practical, visible example of how sustainability can be embedded into daily life.
Expanding Access to Sport and Education
Today, the project reaches over 1,000 children every week through a combination of:
- Structured physical education
- Environmental education
- After-school sport programmes
- Organised competition
Where access to safe and reliable sport was once limited, there is now a consistent and engaging environment that encourages participation, routine, and aspiration.
The introduction of structured competitions, including a regular 6-a-side league, has been a standout success. Weekly fixtures have strengthened attendance, built excitement, and created a sense of identity among participants. What began as a football initiative has evolved into a wider community event, with finals days drawing large crowds and generating an atmosphere of energy, pride, and celebration.
A Space That Inspires
The Eco-Turf has completely transformed what is possible within the community. An underused space has become a vibrant hub of activity, where children feel safe, valued, and excited to be.
This sense of ownership and pride is evident not only in participation levels but also in the way the wider community has embraced the space. It is no longer just a sports facility; it is a place where people come together.
Creating Local Opportunities
Beyond its impact on young people, the project is also creating meaningful opportunities for local employment and development.
- 12 previously unemployed young people have been trained and employed as coaches
- Additional local youth are actively involved in maintaining and supporting the community garden
These roles provide more than income, they create visible, trusted role models and strengthen community ownership of the project.
More Than a Pitch
The Eco-Turf initiative represents a holistic approach to development. By combining sport, sustainability, and education, it creates a safe, positive, and nature-connected environment where children can learn, play, compete, and grow.
At the same time, it delivers lasting benefits to the wider community through environmental innovation, improved food security, and increased access to employment opportunities.
This is more than a place to play, it is a platform for long-term impact.
