Boats on Wheels Returns in 2025: Expanding Access to Sailing for Saint Lucian Youth

Boats on Wheels makes its return in 2025, building on the success of previous years with a renewed commitment to expanding access to sailing for young people across Saint Lucia. This collaborative initiative between UTS Saint Lucia, the Saint Lucia Yacht Club, and the Saint Lucia Sailing Association delivers weekly sailing sessions to children from coastal and inland communities during school term time.

The program specifically targets youth from the Monchy community, bringing them to the water each Wednesday to learn the fundamentals under the guidance of trained local coaches. By transporting boats and equipment directly to accessible launch points, Boats on Wheels breaks down one of the key barriers to participation: physical access to the sport.

In addition to sailing instruction, participants also receive free meals as part of the program, ensuring they are well-fed and energised throughout the day.

Beyond teaching technical skills, the program promotes teamwork, confidence, and leadership, while also offering a pathway into a valuable vocational skillset. For many participants, sailing represents a new and inspiring opportunity in an industry that has traditionally been viewed as out of reach.

By continuing to develop local talent and open up real employment and competitive possibilities within the maritime and sailing sectors, Boats on Wheels is helping to reshape perceptions and create new prospects for youth across the island.
