Miles for Smiles: Volunteers Raise Over £2,000 to Build Safe Sports Courts for Girls in Saint Lucia

On 15th March 2026, global volunteers at United Through Sport Caribbean successfully hosted their first Miles for Smiles campaign of the year. This year volunteers and staff came together to combine the past two approaches of running and swimming to cover the length of the island twice (87km).

Going the Extra Mile

This challenge brought together 23 volunteers, 19 of whom ran 5km, and 16 who swam a distance between 500m and 1km in the open water, a combined total of 110km, exceeding the goal by 23km. The testament of the team’s dedication raised funds through donations to financially support the construction and enhancement of facilities at St. Joseph’s Convent Secondary School. This helps to further promote female participation on the island, an area which is massively underrepresented.

Through the efforts of the team and the generosity of our donors, the team in Saint Lucia has currently raised a staggering £2,043 from this event.

Building Safe Sporting Environments for Girls

The funds raised will go towards creating a safe, inclusive, and inspiring space for young female athletes, including:

  • A sheltered seating area
  • A secure fenced court space
  • A flat, painted playing surface

These developments will provide young girls with greater access to sport, helping to build confidence, encourage participation, and create long-term opportunities.

Thank You to Our Supporters
