At United Through Sport, we believe school holidays should be a time for children to thrive. That is why our Holiday Camps are designed to provide more than just fun, they offer structure, safety, mentorship, and opportunity. When schools close across South Africa, too many children are left exposed to risk. With limited adult supervision, growing nutrition insecurity, and a lack of safe spaces, the school holidays can become some of the most vulnerable times for young people.

A Week of Growth and Belonging in Jeffreys Bay
Last week, over 200 children from the Pellsrus community in Jeffreys Bay experienced something truly special. For four impactful days, our Pellsrus Holiday Camp transformed the local school grounds into a space filled with learning, laughter, and empowerment. The camp combined structured sports coaching, creative workshops, and life skills education to create an environment where children could feel valued, supported, and inspired.
Each day offered a carefully balanced programme, with a focus on personal development, teamwork, and growth. Activities were designed not only to entertain but also to equip children with practical skills and the confidence to apply them in their daily lives. For many participants, this camp provided an opportunity to engage in experiences they may not normally have access to, giving them a sense of possibility and hope.
The main components of the programme included:
- Structured Sports Coaching
Children participated in a variety of sports, including football, netball, boxing, and team-building games. Coaches worked with participants to improve both their physical abilities and their understanding of teamwork. The sense of achievement from mastering a new skill or winning a game boosted self-confidence and encouraged children to take pride in their efforts. - Life Skills Education
In partnership with Aware.org, we conducted alcohol awareness workshops to equip children with information and strategies to make healthier choices. Sessions also focused on topics such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, and goal-setting. Learning these skills in a supportive environment helped children internalise them more effectively than they might through classroom instruction alone. - Nutritious Meals
The camp provided daily meals to ensure that all children had the energy and focus to participate fully in the programme. For some participants, these meals were a vital source of nourishment that might otherwise be uncertain during school holidays.
For these children, the Pellsrus Holiday Camp represented more than four days of activity. It was a space where they could grow, be heard, develop new skills, and simply enjoy being children. The combination of physical, creative, and educational experiences, paired with nurturing mentorship and practical support, created a holistic approach to child development that leaves lasting impact.
Celebrating Achievement and Community
The week concluded with a vibrant community tournament where every child had the chance to showcase their new skills, take part in workshops, and experience the joy of competitive sport in a supportive environment.
Thanks to generous donations from Leeds City College Sport and Bishop Burton College, we were also able to distribute much-needed sports kits and equipment. These resources will continue to benefit children and coaches long after the camp has ended.
Why Holiday Camps Matter
In communities where young people face daily challenges, holiday camps are not a luxury; they are a necessity. They provide preventative support by keeping children engaged in positive activities and away from potential harm. They promote mental well-being through social connection, play, and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a team. Most importantly, they create opportunities for personal growth, where children learn to believe in themselves and recognise their potential.
A Collective Effort for Impact
This camp was made possible through the collaboration of Pellsrus Primary School, our dedicated coaches, volunteers, partners, and donors. Together, we created a week that not only impacted over 200 children but also strengthened the bonds within the community itself.
At United Through Sport, we are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to safe, enriching experiences that build brighter futures. When we invest in children, we invest in stronger, healthier communities.
Thank you to everyone who made the Pellsrus Holiday Camp a success. This is what meaningful impact looks like when sport becomes a catalyst for change.
