2025 Highlights: Inspiring Visits That United Us Through Sport

2025 has been a year filled with inspiring visits, unforgettable moments, powerful connections, and stories that remind us of the power of sport. Across every field, court, and classroom, United Through Sport South Africa has witnessed firsthand how sporting icons can ignite hope, build confidence, and inspire the next generation to dream beyond their circumstances.

Here’s a look back at some of the incredible visits that made this year one to remember.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Sparking Dreams at Gelvandale Primary

The year began with a wave of excitement as the Sunrisers Eastern Cape captured the attention of the entire province with their on-field brilliance. Off the field, they captured the hearts and dreams of our young athletes.

Before their big game at St George’s Park, the team made a special visit to Gelvandale Primary School, joining our local youth coaches in sport-for-development sessions. The joy on the children’s faces said it all. Seeing their heroes up close reminded them that they are not defined by their circumstances. Sometimes, all it takes is one role model to change a child’s perspective and inspire them to dream bigger.

A heartfelt thank you to Laureus South Africa for making this unforgettable visit possible! Our youth coaches were proudly in the stands the next day, cheering the Sunrisers on to victory!

Siya Kolisi and the Kolisi Foundation

Inspiring Visit from Homegrown Talent

In February, we were honoured to welcome Siya Kolisi and the Kolisi Foundation team to two of our SiyaPhakama Primary Schools. The children’s excitement was electric as they met a sporting legend who came from their own township. Proof that greatness can start anywhere.

Siya’s message was simple yet powerful:

“Your dreams are valid, and your future is in your hands.”

His visit left our young stars motivated and full of pride in who they are and where they come from.

Together with the Kolisi Foundation, Kazibantu Project, and Ubuntu Pathways, our Siyaphakama coaches also reflected on ways to strengthen the program and deepen its impact in township schools. Because when we rise together, the entire community thrives.

Terre des Hommes Africa

Rolling Up Sleeves and Getting Active

Mid-year brought a special visit from Terre des Hommes Africa (TDH) and their German Ambassador, Christian Schulteloh, who joined our programmes for an active and energetic day.

From Learn to Move to Keep Active sessions, our guests rolled up their sleeves and got moving alongside our young beneficiaries. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and genuine connection.

We’re so grateful for TDH’s continued partnership and commitment to using sport as a tool to uplift and empower our youth.

Springbok Women and African Bombers

Planting Seeds of Greatness

July was a month of pure inspiration! Our SiyaPhakama rugby stars had the absolute honour of being visited by the Springbok Women, made possible through the incredible African Bombers Rugby Club.

From coaching clinics to fun games, the Springbok Women brought energy, encouragement, and heart to every interaction. Their presence showed our players that their dreams are valid and their heroes are not distant figures. They are women and men from our communities who have worked hard and persevered.

Khanyisa Chawane

The Power of Netball

We closed out July on a high note as Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane joined us for an empowering netball coaching session. Her visit focused on fundamentals, teamwork, and leadership, but it also went far beyond the court.

Khanyisa’s story and authenticity resonated deeply with our girls. She showed them that with determination and belief, they too can rise to the top. Her presence was a reminder that sport is more than a game. It’s a platform for growth, confidence, and community.

A massive thank you to Khanyisa for showing up and inspiring the next generation of young women!

Looking Ahead

From cricket to rugby, football to netball, every visit this year has left a lasting mark on our programmes and our young people. These moments of connection are what fuel our mission to empower youth, build stronger communities, and unite South Africa through the transformative power of sport.

Here’s to more partnerships, more inspiration, and more young dreamers stepping onto the field, ready to chase their goals on and off the pitch.
