Last week marked a special milestone for United Through Sport as we proudly welcomed our very first Uniformed Public Service group from Bridgwater & Taunton College. From the moment they arrived, their energy, teamwork, and determination made a lasting impression especially at Van Der Kemp Primary School.

Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Impact at Van Der Kemp
In their first week on the ground in South Africa, the students jumped straight into action, transforming six foundation phase classrooms. Previously described by teachers as dull and dark, these spaces made it tough to engage young learners. With little colour or natural light, students often felt tired and unfocused.
But the Bridgwater & Taunton students were more than up for the challenge. With paintbrushes and big hearts, they brought a new energy to each classroom. They didn’t just paint walls, they reorganised the space and added vibrant colours and thoughtful decorations. Every detail was considered with the needs of the children and teachers in mind.
The results were nothing short of transformational. Bright, welcoming classrooms now greet the children each morning. Where there were once shadows, there’s now light, colour, and inspiration. Teachers have already noticed the difference. Students are more alert, engaged, and excited to learn.
The gratitude from the school community has been overwhelming. What started as a volunteer placement quickly became something much more meaningful, a legacy of positive change that will be felt for years to come.
We are incredibly proud of what the Bridgwater & Taunton College students achieved in just one week. Their hard work, compassion, and drive remind us exactly why these programmes matter.
Thank you, Bridgwater & Taunton for your lasting impact.
