Launch of Our School-Based Fundamental Movement Programme in Ghana

Across Ghana, reports continue to highlight a concerning gap in structured physical activity within primary schools. It is estimated that around 70% of children are not meeting recommended physical activity levels. This lack of engagement is not only impacting general fitness and health but is also limiting the holistic development that sport and movement naturally support.

Recent assessments of primary school children in Ghana have revealed below-average results in both motor skills and overall fitness. In many cases, Physical Education (PE) is either inconsistently timetabled or treated as optional, leaving children without regular opportunities to develop essential physical and social skills.

In response to this, United Through Sport is proud to have launched a new In-School Fundamental Movement Programme within our two partner schools.

Building Strong Foundations Through Fundamental Movement

The programme is designed around engaging, fun-focused activities, delivered through a structured curriculum centered around developing core movement skills. These foundational skills such as balance, coordination, agility, and spatial awareness, are critical in helping children build the confidence and competence needed for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

By embedding these sessions into the school environment, we are ensuring that children have consistent access to quality physical education, regardless of previous limitations.

More Than Just Physical Development

While improving physical fitness is a key objective, the impact of the programme goes far beyond movement.

Through participation, children are developing essential life skills including:

  • Teamwork
  • Discipline
  • Leadership
  • Confidence
  • Gender empowerment

These outcomes are particularly important in creating inclusive environments where all children, especially girls, feel encouraged to participate and lead within sport.

Powered by Volunteers

This initiative has been made possible thanks to the dedication and energy of our volunteers during Term 1. Their commitment to delivering engaging sessions and creating positive learning environments has been instrumental in the successful launch of the programme.

As we continue to grow this initiative, we look forward to expanding its reach and impact, ensuring more children have access to the benefits of structured physical education. beyond sport, creating opportunities for skill development, cultural exchange, and meaningful impact within local communities every step of the way.
