Celebrating Youth Talent and Healthy Lifestyles in Gqeberha, South Africa

During the recent school holidays, October 2025, United Through Sport continued its dedication to youth development through sport by hosting the fourth and final Aware.org Tournament at Sapphire Primary School, one of the organization’s Keep Active programme schools. The event brought together learners from Boet Jeggels Primary, Cederburg Primary, and the broader Booysen Park community for a week of spirited competition, teamwork, and fun.

A Week of Sport, Teamwork and Healthy Living

The week-long Holiday Programme brought together 130 children from across Gqeberha, surpassing the initial target of 80 participants. Learners from Sapphire Primary and the Booysen Park community took part in a variety of sporting activities designed to promote teamwork, discipline, and healthy living.

In addition to the fun and competition, participants attended “No Underage Drinking” awareness sessions, reinforcing Aware.org’s important message about responsible choices and healthy lifestyles. These sessions aimed to educate young people on the dangers of underage drinking and to empower them to make positive decisions both on and off the field.

Building Confidence and Friendships

Throughout the programme, children were divided into teams across various sports and competed for the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) in each category. Each day, they enjoyed nutritious lunches, and on the final tournament day, they were treated to lunch and snack packs as part of the celebration.

“Seeing children from the Booysens Park area come together with such energy and sportsmanship was inspiring”

“The joy on their faces throughout the week reminded us that sport is not just about competition, it’s about building confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging. We’re proud to continue creating these opportunities for our young athletes.”

Alizwa September, Tournament Director

A Safe and Engaging Space for Youth

The event not only encouraged healthy competition but also provided a safe, engaging environment for children during the school break. The success of the programme reflects United Through Sport’s ongoing mission to empower, engage, and inspire young people through the power of sport, while promoting positive social and healthy outcomes in local communities.
