Volunteer of the Year 2024

Rory joined United Through Sport during his gap year, bringing invaluable rugby experience from the Ulster setup. From day one, his expertise raised the coaching standards, inspiring local children and helping them develop their skills and love for the game. Beyond his technical knowledge, Rory’s outgoing personality fostered great relationships amongst his fellow volunteers and built strong community ties, including joining a local church group and representing a local rugby XV, where he made an immediate impact.

However, Rory’s time with us wasn’t without its challenges. Midway through his placement, he suffered a serious leg injury, breaking his leg in three places during a weekend rugby fixture. Despite the setback and the prospect of a long recovery, Rory’s resilience was unwavering. Rather than letting the injury derail his plans, he returned to the schools after surgery, coaching from the sidelines on crutches and in a moon boot, continuing to inspire the children and his fellow volunteers.

Rory’s commitment, positive attitude, and determination made him a standout volunteer throughout his placement. His ability to overcome adversity and maintain his dedication to the programme was truly remarkable.

At our annual reunion in London in December, Rory was proudly awarded Volunteer of the Year for his incredible contributions. His journey is a testament to the spirit of perseverance, leadership, and impact that defines United Through Sport.

We are incredibly proud to have had Rory as part of our team, and his legacy continues to inspire all of us.
