Physical education is about more than just movement, it’s a chance for young children to explore, imagine, and express themselves through play. Our recent PE session with Collective Kids and Memorial Preschool was a perfect example of how creativity and activity go hand in hand.
With the theme of “Imaginary Instruments,” the children dove into a world of music and movement, transforming the space into a lively concert hall. From drumming invisible beats to strumming pretend guitars, they embraced every moment with excitement and energy. Guided by our dedicated volunteers, this session was filled with laughter, learning, and limitless imagination.
Our dedicated intern, Lucas Tusch, captured the magic of this session in the following blog, showcasing the joy and enthusiasm of these young learners.

Lucas’ Reflection On The Session: A Magical Day of Play and Imagination
Laughter, energy, and creativity filled the air as we welcomed young learners from Collective Kids and Memorial Preschool for a lively and imaginative physical education (PE) session. The children arrived bright-eyed and eager, ready to embark on an exciting journey through music, movement, and play.
The theme of the day was “Imaginary Instruments”, and from the very start, the little ones embraced the concept with enthusiasm. We began by introducing them to a variety of pretend musical instruments, including the flute, drums, piano, and guitar. With their imaginations in full swing, they mimicked playing each instrument, turning the space into a lively concert hall filled with invisible melodies and rhythms.
To get their bodies moving, we engaged them in interactive games centered around their imaginary instruments. We asked the children to march in a parade while playing their pretend flutes, creating a whimsical musical procession. As they lifted their hands to “blow” into their instruments, they giggled and skipped along with delight.
Next, we transitioned into a drumming circle where the children “played” their imaginary drums using energetic hand and arm movements. They followed rhythmic patterns, tapping their hands on their knees, the floor, and even in the air, feeling the beat of the invisible drums in their hearts. The excitement grew as we encouraged them to play faster, slower, louder, and softer, helping them develop an awareness of rhythm and movement.
The piano and guitar segments added another layer of engagement. The children wiggled their fingers to “play” a grand piano and strummed their invisible guitars with enthusiasm. We even had a little rock band moment where they pretended to perform for an adoring audience, which, of course, included their teachers and facilitators cheering them on.
By the end of the session, the little musicians had expended their boundless energy, laughing and sharing their favorite moments. It was a delightful experience filled with joy, creativity, and exercise—an unforgettable day for all involved.
We look forward to hosting more fun-filled PE sessions where imagination and movement come together to create magical learning experiences for these young minds!
