On 12th July 2025, global volunteers at United Through Sport Caribbean successfully hosted their first Miles for Smiles fundraiser, to support the campaign set off by their counterpart volunteers in South Africa. Rather than taking the common approach of running a targeted distance, this group took on a new challenge: the initiative brought together 21 volunteers who collectively swam nearly 20 miles, exceeding the original target of swimming the 14-mile width of the island. Their efforts gathered sponsors and donations to support United Through Sport’s swimming programmes across the island.

The challenge was not only a test of endurance and teamwork but also a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of safe and inclusive sporting environments for the kids. Through the efforts of the participants and the generosity of donors, the event raised a remarkable £1017.
Supporting Safe Swimming for Children
All proceeds from the Miles for Smiles swim will go towards a new outdoor shelter to support the delivery of swimming sessions on the island. The shelter will serve as a safe and private changing space for children. This infrastructure will strengthen the programme’s ability to deliver accessible and child-friendly sporting opportunities in a secure environment.
Swimming remains an essential life skill and the funds raised through this initiative will have a lasting impact, ensuring that more children in Saint Lucia can participate confidently and safely in aquatic activities.
