The overarching goal of United Through Sport Mauritius is to increase mass participation in sport and physical activity in the youth, providing access to high-level coaching and introducing new sports on the island of Mauritius. We collaborate with local coaches to offer coaching support in some of the island’s most popular sports, such as football, basketball, swimming, cycling, handball and volleyball. Additionally, United Through Sport Mauritius has taken the opportunity to introduce new sports like rugby, ultimate frisbee, and netball during our sessions. Our sessions are designed to promote personal growth, health benefits, skill enhancement, inclusivity, and most importantly, fun. Below our set objectives of UTS Mauritius:

1.1 To facilitate sports in the community creating pathways of sports development;

1.2 To increase physical activity and participation of the youth developing a mass participation program, facilitated by international sports coaches, volunteering;

1.3 To use sport for improved education – by providing pathways to success for talented and dedicated individuals through scholarships to top local high schools and tertiary education including international education opportunities;

1.4 To use direct sports coaching – for its health benefits, improved mental well-being and increased life skills (teamwork, leadership, decision making and communication;

In close collaboration with, the Ministry Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation and The Honourable Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint we have jointly undertaken projects aimed at providing coaching to underprivileged children in the southern region of the island. Our initiative involved coaching sessions at the new beach arena facility, where we covered a diverse range of sports including swimming, football, ultimate frisbee, rugby, and various physical activity games. We firmly believe in the importance of physical activity due to the myriad of well being benefits it offers. Our swimming program places a strong emphasis on teaching children how to swim, ensuring their safety when enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches.

Through these efforts, we are not only introducing new sports and developing physical motor skills but also supporting existing projects delivered by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport & Recreation. Our aim is to assist and promote a culture of physical activity and personal development among the youth of Mauritius, bringing international knowledge sharing of good practice in sports and recreation development.

United Through Sport Mauritius has established a partnership with local schools and colleges, e.g. St. Esprit College, where we work closely with sports teachers to introduce new sports and provide support for popular sports already played at schools. Through this collaboration, we introduced the exciting new sports of ultimate frisbee and netball to the students and teachers, who eagerly embraced these sports with vigour and enthusiasm. Rugby, a relatively unknown sport on the island, was quickly adopted by the students, and we witnessed remarkable progress in a short time. Despite basketball’s popularity, netball was virtually unknown, but the students showed remarkable aptitude and ability for this new sport.

Our collaboration with local sports clubs and coaches on the island is a cornerstone of our efforts to provide additional knowledge and support to the sports coaches of Mauritius and the children participating. Our work spans a diverse range of sports, including swimming, football, and basketball.

In our football program, we actively engage with local neighbourhood clubs in Quatre Bornes and Bassin, partnering with sports coaches to deliver structured coaching sessions for children aged 9-18. These sessions not only focus on skill development but also serve as a source of inspiration for the children, providing them with positive role models and encouragement to enhance international spoken languages.

The swimming program takes place at the Emirates swimming pool, a remarkable facility where we assist local swim coaches in providing coaching to children of all abilities, ranging from 4 to 15 years old. Our aim is to nurture their skills and instil the confidence they need to excel in the water.

In the basketball program, we collaborate with local coaches at various locations across the island, offering coaching to children of different ages and skill levels. Basketball serves as a valuable tool for developing physical activity habits and essential life skills among the youth. We have partnerships with teams playing in the super league, the university and intercollege basketball.

Football
We have developed a partnership with the Liverpool FC academy on the island, located at the prestigious Cote D’Or facility—an elite training centre that is highly regarded. Within this elite system, we actively contribute by providing coaching expertise and supporting technical skill drill in the sessions. Our presence serves as an inspiration and role model for the athletes within this system, as we work together to nurture their sporting talents and personal growth.

The Power of Sports & Recreation

I have worked for 40+ years as a senior sports officer in Mauritius. I have supported the youth in sports and recreation across the island in youth and community centres as well as on official directive in sport policy and delivery for the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Recreation. I retired from service but wanted to continue to be a positive role model for the next generation in sports and physical activity. I have proudly represented my country as an international FIFA football referee and I have seen what sport can provide to the people of Mauritius.

I am pleased to lead United Through Sport Mauritius as President and we are hopeful that we can assist is mass participation in sport and recreation in empowering the youth of today to be active.

As the country director and Vice President of United Through Sport in Mauritius we are pleased to be part of a global initiative in sports and recreation development in the community. I have been with United Through Sport for a number of years supporting our divisions delivery. I am now proud to be able to introduce Mauritius as a division, contributing to the global objective of transforming lives through sport and recreation for the youth. The future looks very promising!

Sport has played an immensely significant role in shaping my personal development, from my early school days to competing at the international level and even throughout my academic journey to a degree level. I am firmly convinced that sport represents one of the most potent catalysts for positive change, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing its transformative impact first-hand in various corners of the globe.

Mauritius is brimming with talent, passion, and dedication to the world of sports. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the possibilities that lie ahead for us in Mauritius. Together, we can harness the power of sport to create a change in Mauritius.
